Emil Berglund

I am working as a System Administrator at MachineGames. Our IT department is pretty small – only four people, including our manager – so my role is broad for a Systems Administrator.We all share the daily support tasks that come in, but my area of expertise is identity management as well as handling software and update deployments for all our workstations and servers.

I’m also mainly responsible for handling our external partners – both inside and outside of Bethesda Softworks – and making sure they have the tools they need while maintaining a high level of security.

I joined MachineGames in September 2019, just after we shipped Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Since then, I´ve been working mainly on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, of course, but I’ve also helped out on other Bethesda Softworks titles such as DEATHLOOP, DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods, Redfall and Starfield.

What does your day-to-day as a System Administrator look like?

Been thinking a bit about what an ordinary day looks like for me, and it has proven to be quite difficult! Every single day has its own challenges that pop up and need to be solved. New people starting, new tools that need to be implemented, and keeping our whole environment up and running on a small team keeps you on your toes!

My daily work is not confined to only MachineGames either, due to how Bethesda Softworks operates, but also includes a lot of cooperation and discussions with colleagues all over the globe!

I’m very proud of what we as a studio have produced and shown to the rest of the world even at this stage. I know how much passion is going into this project from all levels of the company and it really shows. Being part of a team that enables all of our extremely talented colleagues to bring the next Indiana Jones story to life is hard to describe.

Ever since I was a small boy, I’ve always loved video games and been in awe of the worlds that game studios have created through the years. When I got the opportunity to join MachineGames it was a dream come true!

When I first started, I was constantly starstruck by all of the incredible work happening at the studio. And that is a feeling that still comes back from time to time even after almost five years with the company.

What makes MachineGames stand out, in my opinion, are the people. I have never been at a company with so many amazing and varied personalities brought together by their shared passion. Not only is there huge variety in our skillsets, but also in our history, nationality and culture.

What is something that inspires you about your role within the studio?

I love seeing the direct consequences of what me and my team are doing. Designing the infrastructure and watching how it evolves and adapts to different needs and how it enables the studio to create the worlds we want to show people makes every day feel worthwhile.

I am in a role where I get to design and implement a lot of solutions that will have a high impact for hundreds of people. This amount of responsibility and the level of trust people have in me is very inspiring on a personal level.

What other games or studios inspired you to get into the gaming industry?

Oh my, so many games over the years. I think the first games my brother and I got hooked on were probably Disciples 2 and the legendary Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit series! The first game series that got my friends and I totally hooked is probably Halo, which was amazing to replay when the Master Chief Collection got released.

I´ve always been a fan of Bethesda's games and spent hundreds of hours on the Elder Scrolls series. Other series that comes to mind are Borderlands, Call of Duty and Total War.

What do you think audiences will love most about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle when they get their hands on it later this year?

The nostalgia factor will be very high for many players, I think! The characters and story are *

true to Indiana Jones, while still being a proper MachineGames game. That combination, I hope, will create something unique that a lot of people will love.

What has been your most memorable adventure in real life?

Probably the time my family spent in Zimbabwe when I was a child, and some trips to South Africa later in life. Going on full weekend safari tours was an amazing experience.

A couple of years ago some friends and I took a motorcycle trip for a week in Norway. The only way I can describe that trip is probably astonishment over how incredibly beautiful that country is. I will definitely go on another trip like that one in the near future!

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

MachineGames is an amazing place to work. I’ve met so many incredible people since I started, picked up a ton of industry knowledge, and grown more than I ever expected on both a personal and professional level.

It hasn’t been an easy ride. I mean, we went through a whole pandemic. But we’re still going strong and the realization that we are *

 at the end of this project is exhilarating, scary and almost surreal after all these years.

Jocke Sohls

I started out at MachineGames as a Combat Scripter/Designer, which meant I was in charge ofimplementing and making sure the combat experience throughout all the levels were up to the best quality. This involved actually placing and scripting all the enemies in the game’s levels.

I became the Lead Combat Designer during the making of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus where I led a team of combat designers who did all the stuff I had done in previous projects.

I’m currently working as a Senior Game Designer on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Even though I am not officially titled as a Combat Designer anymore, that’s still a primary focus, workingmainly withenemies and their behaviors in combat and stealthand also still making sure the levels canhandle what we need them to.

I have been at MachineGames since mid-2012, so I have been heavily involved with all ofthe studio’s games to date. It has been a really fun experience to be a part of such a well-loved franchise as Wolfenstein for so long, and now working on an IP of the magnitude of Indiana Jones is something I would never have believed in my early career.

Did you have any past career experiences outside of MachineGames that you’d like to share?

I started my career at Starbreeze Studios where I joined as a Scripter/Gameplay Designer before kind of randomly falling into the field of specialization I have today. I was asked by a producer if I wanted to temporarily put a little extra focus on the combat side of things during the making of Syndicate 2012 by moving my desk over next to the AI programmers, and I agreed to that even though I really didn’t have any aspirations to have that as a focus area. That “temporarily” became a permanent thing when I realized that it was really funand that I was also pretty good at it, and I have no regrets about taking that path today.

Working at Starbreeze also meant that I already knew a lot of the people at MachineGames before I started there, as it was founded by Starbreeze veterans, and also a lot of the other staff also came from Starbreeze before joining MG.

What does your day-to-day look like? Can you speak to something specific about your work on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle that you’re particularly proud of?

My main focus on The Great Circle is AI, enemies and combat, but it’smore of a broad design role rather than focusing on just the implementation side of things. This means that any time you get killed by the enemies in the game, I am at the very least, partially responsible for it, so apologies in advance!

I’ve been on the project since very early on, so a lot of my earlier days working on The Great Circle were spent writing designs for the enemies we were going to have in the game and the specific systems they needed to behave as we want them to. These days when the project is farther along, I spend a lot of my time playing the game and testing stuff out, making notes about what works and what doesn’t work as well as we want it to and also getting my hands dirty in the editor by tweaking behaviors of the enemies and NPCs or going into the levels and making adjustments that are needed.

Something I’m really proud and excited about it how much personality we have managed to inject into the enemies to make them really feel like they would belong in Indiana Jones.They taunt you, they talk to and interact with each other, they end up in slapstick situations during fights, etc.All the things you would expect from the antagonists in an Indiana Jones experience. I think players will be very happy with beating these guys up while feeling like Indy himself in the process!

My favorite part of a project is the beginning when no idea is off the table! It’s a lot of fun to come up withideas and work on them to turn them into something that will make it into the game. Sure, a lot of what gets made during that process never ends up in the finished game, but the things that do are very good, and even the rejected ideas can have pieces of designthat can be brought into other designs to enhance them, so nothing is really wasted during this process – knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what you should do!

Another favorite part of the process is when you get closer to the end stage of a project and all the pieces start clicking together and you start to see what the finished game is going to be and not just a bunch of loosely connected design documents. This is also the time when getting your hands dirty with tweaks really pays off, and even fairly minor tweaks to behaviors or durations can have a huge effect on how enjoyable the game is to play.

Working at MG is really liberating; it’s not a huge studio and everyoneis really approachable and open about what’sgoing on at all times. It makes us as employees feel very trustedand valued, which is very important to keep the morale and motivation up.We’re also given quite a lot of freedom to try out and explore different ideas, and that breeds innovation in the long run.If you aren’t afraid to “go a little crazy” sometimes, then really cool stuff can materialize.

What is something that inspires you about your role?

As a designer, I get to be a driving force behind a lot of features and designs that are going into the games we make.That means that I have tointeract a lot with the other disciplines directly to get their buy-in and hear their feedback on things, and that’s something I love to do! I see the job of designer as less “designing the game for others to make” and more “curating the ideas of the studio to something cohesive.”Designing is a collaborative effort, and that is how you get the best results in my opinion.

Sothere’s this little game called The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (if you know your MachineGames history you might know where this is going). I had never heard of it nor the movies it was based on at the time, but for whatever reason I decided to try it out. Then, during the intro, I quickly noticed that almost all the names in the credit sequence sounded extremely Swedish: Jerk, Jens, Fredrik, Anders, etc. This made me do a doubletake and go “hang on, there are Swedish game developers??!” This jumpstarted my interest in finding out more, and I quickly found that Sweden had a big and very successful game dev scene already back then.

Starbreeze was the company who made that Riddick game that got me on the path to where I am today, and I even started my career working for them. I have worked and am still working with a lot of the people behind those Swedish names today at MachineGames.

I think people will be surprised by how much it feels like you are really playing as Indy himself; that has been our goal from the start, of course, but I still think we have achieved it better than we could have ever expected when we began working on the game. This goes for the whole game, and not just the action scenes. It’s there in the exploration parts where you interact with people and puzzles and the story scenes that take place too.

One of my most memorable “adventures” was when me and my sister hiked along the Vasaloppet trail. Vasaloppet is a very big and famous ski trail that hosts an international competition each year with thousands of people joining in from all over the world. It starts in Sälen and ends in Mora and is over 90 kilometers long. It has a hiking trail that follows adjacent to it, which is what we walked over 3 days. It was more of a personal accomplishment for me as I have never done anything like that before, but I am really proud of having done it!

Is there anything you’ve learned that you want to share with prospective game developers?

Do not be afraid to start out your career in a discipline that isn’t the exact one you have as your future goal! Some disciplines can be really hard to get into without a lot of or any industry experience. One example of those harder disciplines is Game Design as there generally aren’t that many of those working on any given project, so there is going to be a lot of competition to get the roles that do exist. That’s why starting out as something with less harsh requirements to begin might be a good idea. For example, consider going into QA or Level Design, and then learn and grow from there. That way you can perform extremely valuable work while still learning a lot and gaining experience. When I was working as Lead Combat Designer, all of my team except myself came from a background in QA, and there’sa very good reason for that: who else knows a game better than they do, and what works and what doesn’t?

You may even find that you love the discipline you started in to be such a good fit for you that you no longer want to leave it, which could be a great thing for your career and enjoyment of your work going forward!

Didrik Breitholtz

What do you find rewarding about your role at MachineGames?

I’ve had several roles during my years at MachineGames. I initially joined as a Quality Assurance tester back in 2012 for Wolfenstein: The New Order. Then I was the Technical Level Designer during the Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, and from there I moved over to doing level design. I’ve always found some way of helping, regardless of the role I had, and I think I have enjoyed the collaborations between the departments the most. Working together to solve problems or sharing ideas is very rewarding and a great way to tie the team together, and that is where I feel being a level designer is a great fit.

What makes your work at MachineGames meaningful to you?

Games go way back for me as a way of escaping the uneventful life of growing up in a village on the countryside, and I think that is quite the common tale for many. Most of us see games as a hobby or a means to wind down after a hectic day at school or work, but they also help people who are going through hard times by providing a place of refuge. That is where I find meaning in what we are doing as game developers.

What are some of your proudest achievements or contributions from your time at MachineGames?

I’ve contributed to all the games we’ve put out so far, be it as a tester or level designer. My favorite project is probably Wolfenstein: The New Order, just because of how new things were for me back then. It was a great experience with a lot of hard work and plenty of late nights (some of them turned into mornings and afternoons). I loved the responsibility of making sure that each part of the game shipped in the quality the developers had intended. I take pride in being part of that first production because it shows what type of games this studio is built for and what we can do.

My most prominent contribution as a level designer was my first challenge in this role; the Gestapo Tower of Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Along with the main campaign mission that played out there I also contributed to its side missions, including a propaganda sabotage, a prison break and an intel retrieval mission. I oversaw the level’s layout and the scripting of all the missions.

Mariusz Macieja

What’s the best part of being a Producer at MachineGames?

The absolute best thing about my job is that there is no such thing as a daily routine. At any given time, I can be working with game designers to break down their ideas into specific tasks, discussing implementation problems with programmers, or making sure that artistic feedback is understandable and actionable… or I might be spending the whole day in the spreadsheets and the bug tracker when we are close to shipping. They’re all very important parts of my job and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As game developers, we tend to start developing a new game with extremely ambitious ideas that (for various reasons) end up being reduced, or even fully cut from the game. As part of my work I’m trying to help teams break down ideas, plan upcoming work and improve the way they communicate, so we can deliver a great game on time without any major flaws, while cutting as little as possible from the original vision. Trying to achieve that – perfecting the game and preserving the original game vision – is what makes my work meaningful.

Are you excited for the future of MachineGames?

I started at MachineGames in early 2020, and so far everything I’ve been working on is still a secret, but I do hope that I’ve already made some impact, and trust me when I say that the best is yet to come!

Alissa Hägglund

“Do what you’ll love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”,

 but I think we all can agree that if you’re able to do what you love you’re extremely fortunate.

What do you think makes your work meaningful?

One of the many things that I love about my line of work is how much of it is essentially problem solving, but on a grand scale. Figuring out how to make all the moving parts work together can be a huge challenge, but it’s a welcome one. It’s always great to see and experience the manifestation of you and the team’s ideas and hard work. Few things are as satisfying as playtesting a concept or a feature and slowly seeing the game transform from idea to reality.

What has been the most impactful part of being at MachineGames?

In my four years at MachineGames I’ve worked on both game and narrative design, and I’m proud of the fact that we’re creating games that are strong in both gameplay and story.

The fact that I’m a part of an industry that I’ve been fascinated by since childhood sometimes feels a bit surreal, but I love knowing I would make my past self proud, and I hope I can help inspire the next generation of girls who have dreams of creating games. We need more women in the game industry.

Being a Game Designer at MachineGames is challenging, fun, and addictive, just like the games we make.

Matthias Develtere

I’m a Senior 3D Artist at MachineGames, and I have the amazing job of working on a lot of what we call our “hero assets” – from robots and weapons to vehicles. These are assets that take a lot of work and have to go through a lot of different departments, but what is so unique about MachineGames is the freedom we all have. Every asset I get to do is one big team undertaking, but there isn’t anyone telling me what to do. Instead it’s a collaboration where everyone is just there giving advice and offering their honest opinion.

MachineGames is the perfect studio for artists who want to challenge themselves with every assignment – from exploring new work methods to taking responsibilities for their own work, planning and execution. We have an amazing concept art department; every sketch or fully fleshed-out design is so appealing that you just can’t wait to start modelling.

What is unique about working on games at MachineGames?

Personally, what was and still is cool about making games at MachineGames is how much the environment allows for growth. Over the years I’ve been here, I really feel like I’ve gotten the chance to grow in terms of coming up with my own designs for the games. At MachineGames you get to put your own little footprint on the artistic vision of the game. All that while being in constant communication with leads and directors because we’re huge believers in the open-door policy.

Something else I really love about MachineGames is the fact that every artist takes ownership over his own assets, from the start of the pipeline till the end of it – from blocking it to the final texture pass. That means you don’t get tunnel vision just focusing on one thing, but instead you get better at the whole process. Just being able to visualize so many cool concepts is a dream come true. From looking at astonishing 2D concepts or listening to an idea, and then getting the chance to translate that person’s vision into 3D and see it come to life.

How have you contributed to an end product and where have you seen your work make an impact on the end product and/or what is your favorite contribution you’ve made to a project and why?

Being in charge of most of the gameplay/hero assets it´s always amazing to see gamer react to them: From some just saying “wow” when a giant dropship cimes down or people just staring into every car to see the uniquely designed dashboards for every car design. It´s these little things where you like to spend maybe an extra couple of hours on during the week just to make it standout to then see them being noticed by gamers/streamers.

Talking about impact of my own work there is of course all the gameplay hero assets I do, making sure they are readable, understandable and work both for AI and the player is of course super important. If the player isn’t interested in these assets or doesn’t even take a couple of second to stand still and look at them, I feel like I felt at my job. On a more personal note I would say, just vehicle. I have a burning passion for making vehicles for games, there is nothing more that I then making them and different variations so we can prop out all our environments with them and make it feel like an even more alive world.

Picking the my favorite contribution is an easy one – we called it the laser puppy. It’s a small robot dog https://www.artstation.com/artwork/N3N3b Still remember the day I started modelling the little thing, even the date hahaha. From the first time I saw the concept and I just wanted to model it, so I begged my producer to assign it to. Never had I worked on robots, so it was big challenge, but then again that´s what I love about MG, getting the chance to prove yourself with trial and error. But what was so cool was to just see it come alive. From being part of the first gameplay meetings, to audio ideas, to sitting down with our concept artist Per G to talk about little details or how his head would move and his little paws could open up. To getting the chance to actually visualizing it. But the most magical thing for me was seeing it animated for the first time. It was a bit like a baby to me, trying to show it anybody at the office: “Look at this puppy he´s alive”. Till this day it still breaks my heart a bit when I see gamers shoot it “evil” robot.
